NorthWord Magazine Launches First-Ever Youth Edition Pilot; Seeking Editorial Advisors

(Fort McMurray, AB — May 12, 2026) — The Northern Canada Collective Society for Writers (NCCSW) is proud to announce the pilot launch of NorthWord – The Next Generation, a new digital literary arts publication and the first of its kind for the organization. This initiative is dedicated to showcasing the voices and creativity of young writers and artists across Northern Alberta.

As a sister publication to NorthWord Magazine, this project will feature poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art by contributors ages 10–18. The publication is set to launch annually during Alberta Culture Days, beginning in September 2027.

Established in 2009, NorthWord highlights regional voices through a collaborative volunteer effort. Since 2019, the magazine has been led by President Dawn Booth, who will bring years of mentorship experience to her additional role as project lead for the youth edition.

“This project offers youth a chance to lead the creative conversation and learn the inner workings of our local arts scene,” says Booth. “By moving beyond traditional submissions and involving young people in the editorial decision-making, we are creating a platform that is both youth-driven and professionally supported.”

As part of this inaugural edition, the organization is now inviting youth ages 14–18 to apply for the newly formed Youth Editorial Advisory Panel (YEAP).

YEAP members will:

• Help select the publication theme

• Review submissions from young creators

• Participate in mentorship-supported editorial discussions

• Gain hands-on experience in publishing and leadership
