NorthWord - The Next Generation is a pilot project aimed at creating an annual, digital-only edition that showcases the creative work of children and youth from the Wood Buffalo region. This publication will serve as a sister initiative to NorthWord Magazine, the region's premier literary arts magazine. Content selection will be youth-led, under the mentorship of award-winning literary art professionals and local artists.

NorthWord: The Next Generation is inviting children and youth writers and artists (ages 10 to 18) to help create our inaugural digital edition, launching in September 2027.
For the first edition, the Youth Editorial Advisory Panel (YEAP) have selected the theme: Seasons.
Your submissions can include the seasons around us, but can also explore the seasons of our lives, our memories, our communities and our imaginations.
What does SEASONS mean to you?
It may be the changing landscape outside your window, a favourite time of the year, a moment of change, growing up, a new beginning, an ending, a memory, a place or something entirely your own.
There is no right or wrong way to interpret the theme. We want to see where your creativity takes you.

WHAT YOU CAN'T SUBMIT
We won't accept anything created by, or supported by, robots (also known as AI). We want human art because its the best kind of art!

Interested in joining a future cohort?
Applications are now being accepted for the 2027-2028 Youth Editorial Advisory Panel. Youth ages 14-18 who are interested in writing, art, storytelling, or creative leadership are encouraged to apply.
