Aspiration, inspiration, and perseverance are prominent leitmotifs in NorthWord’s latest Climbing the Mountain – Issue #15. Although compiled before the evacuation, these themes resonate well with the community more so today. Everyone can explore the summit with readings and an open mic on October 28, 2016 – when this issue will be launched at Points North Gallery. The free event will feature a wine and cheese reception for adults only. It will run from 5 to 8 p.m.
“NorthWord is very pleased to be settling back in to a sense of order. Our long-delayed launch for Issue 15 is in two weeks. Our deepest gratitude goes out to Colin Hartigan and Coldwell Banker Fort McMurray for providing the financial support that enabled us to print this issue,” noted Suzanne McGladdery, president, Northern Canada Collective Society for Writers, a non-profit group, which publishes the literary magazine.
“It's been moving and heart-warming to see our community reach out and support each other. It's crucial that our urgent needs are met, and that we have shelter, warmth, food and psychological support. It's profoundly fulfilling that our soul-deep needs for creativity, story-telling, and art are also being met. We are accepting submissions for our next issue, Take a Deep Breath. It feels like we haven't been able to do that yet, but we're very much looking forward to settling into a predictable rhythm again,” she added.
NorthWord is Wood Buffalo’s first and only literary magazine. It is published twice a year with rotating themes and guest editors. Local communications professional, and freelance writer, Theresa Wells, is this issue’s guest editor. She is looking forward to the “exciting launch of Issue 15.”
“I’ve been honoured to be guest editor. Thanks to the beautiful art work from the talented Lucie Bause, the magazine looks incredible and the talent contained within is equally impressive. It's been a wonderful experience and one I would recommend for anyone interested in the literary arts, particularly if you have interest in editing or learning more about the process of developing a magazine issue based around a cohesive theme,” she explained.
Next issue’s theme as aforementioned is Take a Deep Breath. Local visual artist and photographer, Erin Stinson is looking forward to submissions. Deadline is October 30 midnight. You can send original poetry (50 lines maximum) prose (no more than 3000 words, fiction/non-fiction), and art to northword@hushmail.com. All names are removed by the group’s managing editor, Jane Jacques, who then sends them on to the guest editors.
