NorthWord Launches GoFundMe Campaign on Giving Tuesday

(Fort McMurray, AB, November 27, 2022) NorthWord, A Literary Journal of Canada’s North, Fort McMurray’s first and only literary magazine is all set to launch a $5000 GoFundMe campaign on Giving Tuesday, November 29, to run beyond the “global generosity movement.”

Published by the Northern Canada Collective Society for Writers (NCCSW), a registered non-profit run by volunteers, NorthWord was launched in 2009 and is distributed free of charge twice a year. It features local cover artists always – 26 thus far, and as of November 2022 has published 149 individual writers and 16 individual visual artists. During these 13 years, the journal has received no sustainable funding and struggles to print every issue.

Dawn Booth, President, NorthWord, explains more about launching the GoFundMe.

“We hope this avenue for fundraising will allow NorthWord to remain sustainable for its bi-annual publication run in 2023. Unlike other publications, we can maintain low costs because of the management and facilitating of our volunteers. However, printing and hosting events come with a cost. So, we will still rely on our sponsors and advertisers for funding. This will allow everyone to make one-time donations to support the literary arts, as we continue to run the campaign beyond Giving Tuesday.”

Jane Jacques, Managing Editor, NorthWord adds:

“Since 2009, NorthWord has been the voice of the literary community in the Wood Buffalo region, providing a print venue for writers and artists to share their work. In the beginning, the magazine was an idea with a dozen supporters; now we've published 26 issues of original poetry, prose, photographs, paintings, and drawings, reaching lovers of the arts across Canada and the US. NorthWord is the only literary journal north of Edmonton and the sole outlet for the hundreds of community members who have seen their work on its pages. The creativity on display in NorthWord, from the stunning covers by local artists to the literary and artistic work by everyone from school children to seniors, inspires and enriches the entire region.”
